We’re talking about God as light, God as fire. It resolves something that I think is has troubled Christians over the centuries, which is the question of heaven and hell. How can God send somebody to hell? Why would God want someone to suffer for eternity? It’s a little bit different if you keep in mind that God is light, God is fire. Those who in this life love God and love His light and want more of His light, in the next life, when the veil is taken away and we’re in the uninterrupted presence of God it will be to us like light, and love, and warmth, and every good thing, but for those who love darkness rather than light, as the Gospel of John said, this inescapable light will be misery, and sorrow, and paradoxical darkness to them. So it’s not like heaven and hell or two separate places and God decides where to send people. We decide for ourselves, one day at a time, one choice at a time. In the Last Judgment, it says Jesus separates the sheep from the goats. It doesn’t take a full-scale criminal investigation to tell whether it’s a sheep or a goat. You can tell at a glance and at the end of our lives, our Lord will be able to tell at a glance, whether we turned ourselves into sheep or goats. We go into the light receiving it, experiencing it, by whatever way that we’ve prepared ourselves to experience it during our earthly lives.
