Sin is not in Orthodoxy a series of bad deeds. It’s more like a condition that the whole world suffers from. Like air pollution. All of us contribute to it by the sins that we commit.  All of us are damaged by it. Of course, logically, the innocent are going to be damaged and hurt the most. This is why the innocent suffer. It’s because of sin. Because of the sin that we all contribute to. The process of the spiritual life in Orthodoxy is one of healing the nous. Of setting the nous free from the darkness and the brokenness that has laid hold of it. So that we can hear the Lord’s voice more clearly, more consistently, and live in His presence.
